Article content. One turbo, two litres, 315 horsepower, four cylinders, five doors. The Civic Type R is back, and with it, a question of what it means to offer an enthusiast hatch in today’s market.
I actually got talked out of getting a Type R early this year by a Type R owner saying that he wouldn't recommend the car as a daily due to the tires, wheels, and brakes. Anyway, I took his advice and looked at Subaru WRX's and STi's, but ended up with a Si due to reading about poor reliability with Subaru.
Unfortunately, for us on this side of $35-40k, they share very little. While I'd love to afford and own a Type R, I'd have to make a lot of sacrifices that realistically, I couldn't do. Someday maybe, a used one maybe. But right now is not the time for me. The Si is a nice package on it's own, and a great value at below MSRP.

The Si trim level, which you can only get on the sedan body style, builds upon the Touring's offerings. On the Si, you get a more powerful version of the 1.5-L turbo engine, which gives the Civic 200 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. While you cannot opt for the CVT, you do get the six-speed manual transmission as standard.
